Low temperatures lead to high power use. Unfortunately, that can also mean higher power bills. The colder the air is outside, the harder your heating unit has to work to keep up! However, we have a few easy tips that could save you money when temperatures plummet.
- Keep your thermostat between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
- If you have a smart thermostat, program it to keep your home at a lower temperature while your family is at work or school.
- Replace your air filters.
- Be mindful of hot water usage. Limit shower times and do laundry using cold water.
- Avoid space heaters if you can. Even small heaters can use large amounts of power.
- Look for the EnergyStar logo on new appliances.
- Check your doors and windows. Use heavy curtains or weather strips to block drafts.
- Keep doors closed to rooms you don’t use often.
- Use smaller appliances like Instant Pots or slow cookers instead of the oven.
- Reverse your ceiling fan. By rotating clockwise, your fan will push warmed air back down to you using far less energy.
